AI Overviews

What are Google AI Overviews

Google now answers many searches with a generated summary before a single organic result loads. Here is what that summary actually is, how it gets built, and what makes some pages part of it while others are left out.

The basics

An AI generated summary, not a single ranked result

An AI Overview is a summary that Google generates and places above the standard list of organic results for certain searches. Rather than sending someone to a single page, Google synthesises an answer from several sources at once and presents it directly on the results page, with links out to the pages it drew from.

The feature sits above traditional rankings but depends heavily on them. Content still needs to be crawled, indexed and understood before it has any chance of being pulled into a generated answer, which is why GEO and conventional SEO overlap so much in practice even though they solve slightly different problems.

Not the same as a featured snippet

A featured snippet pulls a passage from one page and credits one source. An AI Overview blends information from multiple pages into a single generated paragraph, with several citations attached rather than one.

Not the same as AI Search

AI Overviews live inside Google's own results page. Tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot are separate conversational surfaces with their own retrieval methods, covered in more depth on our AI Search page.

How it works

Built from entities and relationships, not single pages

An AI Overview is not produced by reading one webpage from top to bottom. Google's systems break a query into related sub questions, retrieve material that answers each one, then assemble a single response grounded in how entities, facts and sources relate to each other across the wider web.

1

Query fan out

A single search is expanded into several related questions behind the scenes, so the system can gather a fuller picture than one query alone would return.

2

Retrieval and ranking

Indexed pages are retrieved and ranked against each sub question, drawing on the same crawling and ranking foundations as standard organic search.

3

Synthesis from entities

The response is generated by reasoning over entities and their relationships rather than one document, which is why entity building and a clear position in the knowledge graph carry real weight in this process.

What influences inclusion

Why some pages get cited and others get skipped

Two pages can rank near each other organically and still see very different outcomes when an AI Overview is generated. Inclusion tends to come down to how easily a page's content can be lifted, verified and attributed, more than how it has historically ranked.

Clarity of the answer

Content that states a direct answer early, in plain language, is easier to extract and summarise accurately than content that buries the point in a long lead in.

Structured data support

Marked up content gives Google an explicit, machine readable description of what a page contains, which is the core argument for proper schema markup rather than relying on prose alone.

Topical authority

Pages that sit inside a well built cluster of related content tend to be trusted with more weight than an isolated page covering the same topic alone, which is the basis of building genuine topical authority rather than a single standalone article.

Source credibility

Signals that establish a site and its author as a credible source, including consistent entity presence across the web, feed directly into which citations Google is willing to surface.

A separate discipline

Ranking first does not guarantee an AI Overview citation

It is common to assume that the page sitting at position one organically will automatically be the page an AI Overview cites. In practice the two surfaces share a foundation but are not judged the same way, which is why treating them as identical leads to gaps in visibility.

Traditional organic ranking

  • Weighs backlinks, on page relevance and historical performance heavily
  • Rewards a single page that fully satisfies one specific query
  • Position is visible and trackable over time

AI Overview inclusion

  • Weighs extractability, clarity and entity context alongside ranking signals
  • Can pull from several pages and several sites in one generated answer
  • Citation presence shifts as the underlying answer regenerates

This is the reason working with a dedicated GEO agency matters once AI Overviews and AI Search become a meaningful share of how an audience finds answers. The skills involved sit alongside conventional SEO rather than replacing it.

Frequently asked

AI Overviews, answered directly

What is a Google AI Overview
A Google AI Overview is an AI generated summary that appears above the standard organic results for certain searches. It draws on multiple sources to produce a direct answer and includes links to the pages it used, rather than showing a single ranked list.
How is an AI Overview different from a featured snippet
A featured snippet shows an extract from a single page and credits one source. An AI Overview is a newly generated answer that can combine information from several pages and cite more than one source within the same response.
Do AI Overviews replace traditional search results
No. AI Overviews appear above the standard list of organic results, which still loads beneath them for most queries. The two surfaces sit on the same results page rather than one replacing the other.
Does ranking number one guarantee an AI Overview citation
No. Strong organic rankings help because a page needs to be well indexed and trusted to be considered, but AI Overview inclusion also depends on how clearly an answer is stated, how well it is structured, and how the page's entities are understood, so a top ranking page is not automatically cited.
What can a website do to be cited in AI Overviews
Stating direct answers early in clear language, supporting content with accurate structured data, building topical depth around a subject, and maintaining consistent entity signals across the web all increase the likelihood of being drawn into a generated answer.
